Young man!
Get up, this instant!
When an elder is standing,
you ought to know
to offer your seat—
the impudence,
the sheer lack of manners!

· I look back and ask myself—
have I not, at times, been just such an elder?

The wheels of time hurry along, keeping pace with the speeding subway car. The world changes swiftly, and within it people live out their own lives, straightening weary shoulders as they begin each new day. In this space—inside a subway car—we come face to face with the many faces of life. One day, on the subway, I encountered an elder of true dignity, a figure who shone undimmed even amid the flow of time.

The elder was advanced in years, but his age was nothing more than a number. On his skin were etched the traces of time and of a life fully lived, and in his eyes lingered a certain warmth of the seasons he had weathered. When I was young, my grandmother told me that becoming a true adult was not merely a matter of adding years—one's heart and conduct had to grow rich as well. That elder was showing me, in the very way he lived, what her words had meant.

The subway is often crowded, with too few seats even for the old and frail. When the elder boarded, he simply stood there, the weight of a lifetime resting on his shoulders. A young man offered him his seat, and the elder declined again and again with a humble smile. In that moment the subway car became a small theater, and upon its stage a rich human drama began to unfold.

Bowing his head, the elder said to the young man, "Thank you." In that single word of thanks lay the respect and understanding he had gathered over the years, and all the wisdom of his life. In that instant an intangible warmth spread through the car, and a faint smile crossed every face.

My own reflection in the window has already crossed the river of time, hastening toward the half-century mark. Like that old gentleman, I remind myself that I too must live each day guarding my own dignity. For all of us, to walk with grace through life's long journey—that is what it truly means to live as an elder. An elder's dignity is a flower that blooms where time and life intersect, and that flower breathes out its fragrance in every moment we share with one another, care for one another, and love.
