No One Came to Our Homeroom Teacher's Funeral

He was our little saint.

"모두
책가방

"Everyone —
bookbags
up on your desks,
eyes shut,
both hands
on your heads."

I
still
cannot forget those days.

"Hands on your heads, all of you, and close your eyes.
A classmate of ours has lost her pencil case.
The culprit is surely in this room.
Raise your hand quietly.
Your secret
will be kept, without fail."

A girl had lost her brand-new pencil case.
She told the homeroom teacher
that it had been "stolen in class."
And so
all this was the teacher's way of catching the thief.

When no hand went up,
the threat went on and on:
"If no one comes forward, no one is going home."
An hour passed that way.

It was winter,
and the days were short.
The classroom clock,
knowing nothing,
had already
crept to five.
The sun was slipping slowly down.

Then,
the teacher's voice:
"That's it. That will do.
Everyone, open your eyes
and pack up your bags."

Some child, it seemed, had raised a hand.
And thanks to that child,
whoever it was,
we were set free —
a release that was no release at all.

That child alone stayed behind
and was led to the teachers' room.
Was the secret,
in the end, ever kept?

The next day
his mother was summoned to the school.
And at some point
that child
stopped coming to class.
In the end
he never finished the year.

Later
the teacher
told us:
"His parents moved away —
he transferred to another school!"

Much later, the truth came out.
The pencil case
had been hidden as a prank —
by the girl's own best friend!

That friend said,
"It was only meant as a joke,
but the room turned so grim,
so terrifying, I couldn't raise my hand."

The teacher, who knew all this,
remained silent to the end.
Was that, too,
for the keeping of a secret?

A few years ago
notice of that teacher's death arrived.
Most of his students did not attend.

And of course,
nowhere among them
was the boy who had transferred away,
nor the girl who had lost
her pencil case.

Our homeroom teacher, back then —
shutting every child's eyes to hunt down the one who had the pencil case:
was that a reasonable choice?

Countless years
have passed since then,
and still
I have found no certain answer.

We cannot forget those days
because we can never set them right.

A pencil case can be found again; a lost boy never comes back.
His absence haunts us always.

We cannot forget his hand rising above his head.
That moment of sacrifice
was his last farewell
to us.

He was our little saint —
never
to be forgotten.
