The Korean Dramas That Actually Crossed 9% Ratings in 2026

A look at the nine Korean dramas that actually crossed 9% in Nielsen Korea's nationwide TV ratings in 2026, and why that list looks nothing like the shows international fans are talking about.

Nine Korean dramas crossed 9% in Nielsen Korea's nationwide household ratings in 2026, a mark that measures a completely different kind of hit than the one most international fans hear about. None of them are the Netflix original that broke into the platform's all-time top 10 this year.

The short version

  • Nine Korean dramas crossed 9% nationwide ratings in 2026.
  • Netflix's biggest K-drama hit, Teach You a Lesson, has no Nielsen rating at all.
  • Love on the Menu topped them all at 16.6%, unnoticed abroad.

That gap is not a coincidence. It is what happens when two separate scoreboards — one built for terrestrial and cable television, one built for a streaming platform — get treated as if they measure the same thing.

KBS2's Love on the Menu, Sept 6

The nine dramas that actually got there

Sorted by their nationwide peak, the list runs: Love on the Menu (KBS2, 16.6%), Perfect Crown (MBC, 13.8%), The Judge Returns and Reborn Rookie (MBC and JTBC, both 13.6%), Undercover Miss Hong (tvN, 13.1%), My Royal Nemesis (SBS, 11.8%), Phantom Lawyer and Filing for Love (both cresting just above 10%), and A Bona Fide Killer (MBC, 10.2% and still airing).

Behind those nine sit dozens of dramas that never got close. A typical 2026 cable miniseries ran in the 2% to 5% range, and several buzzy titles that dominated social media conversation, including more than one Netflix-first release, never touched a Nielsen panel at all.

Two kinds of No. 1

Ratings mean a household's TV set, not a phone

Nielsen Korea's number is a household rating: the share of measured homes with a television tuned to that channel at that minute. It says nothing about phones, laptops, or anyone watching later.

A separate figure, the individual rating, estimates people rather than homes and is usually lower and less reported. When an outlet says a drama hit 13%, it is almost always citing the household number, and it is worth checking which one before comparing two shows.

Two versions of the household number also circulate for every drama. The nationwide figure covers the whole country; the Seoul metropolitan area figure covers only the capital region. Coverage of a finale often quotes whichever number is higher, so the two get mixed together loosely in casual reporting.

MBC's 2025-to-2026 turnaround

Why a Netflix No. 1 and a Nielsen No. 1 are different charts

2026's biggest international Korean drama story was Teach You a Lesson, a Netflix original that topped the platform's non-English chart for four straight weeks and later entered Netflix's all-time top 10 for non-English series — only the second Korean show ever to do that, after Squid Game.

It has no Nielsen Korea nationwide rating at all. It never aired on a Korean broadcast or cable channel, so Nielsen's TV panel never measured it; Nielsen tracked it separately, ranking it fourth among streaming originals by minutes watched in the US for one week in June.

An international fan who only follows Netflix charts would never learn that Love on the Menu, a KBS2 weekend drama with no global streaming push, was the actual highest-rated show on Korean television in 2026.

A Bona Fide Killer's August peak

The genre nobody outside Korea is watching

Love on the Menu belongs to a Korean TV category with no real Western equivalent: the weekend family drama, a 50-plus episode series airing Saturday and Sunday nights aimed at multi-generational households watching together.

These shows rarely get an English title, a Netflix slot, or a fan subtitling team, because their appeal — long-running family melodrama with a slow-burn cast of a dozen relatives — does not travel the way a tight 12-to-16 episode thriller does. Yet they routinely out-rate the shows that do travel.

Undercover Miss Hong, by contrast, is a tvN weekend drama that did travel — Park Shin-hye's first television role in two years, playing a financial regulator posing as a 20-year-old office junior. It reached 13.1% while also streaming internationally, showing the two audiences can overlap when a title has both a recognizable star and a broadcast slot.

MBC went from zero double digits to two of the year's biggest hits

The scale of MBC's 2026 depends on how bad 2025 was. Across eight dramas in 2025, MBC did not clear 10% once — its best performer, Undercover High School, peaked at 8.3%.

That drought made The Judge Returns a milestone before it even finished: its February 13 episode hit 13.6% nationwide, MBC's first double-digit drama in roughly a year and eight months. Three months later, Perfect Crown matched the feat and then beat it, closing at 13.8% and becoming the network's third-highest-rated Friday-Saturday drama since 2020.

The two shows also illustrate how a drama earns its number. Judge Returns opened to a modest 4.3% and climbed for weeks on word of mouth about its time-travel revenge plot, a slow build; Perfect Crown, an alternate-history romance starring IU and Byeon Woo-seok, rose faster on star power and a reported production budget above 30 billion won.

Crossing 9% once is not the same as staying there

Some dramas on this list only touched the mark briefly. Phantom Lawyer opened at 6.3%, climbed steadily, reached 10.0% in its sixth episode, held 9.5% the week after, then slid to a 7.6% finale — a shape common enough that Korean entertainment reporters have a name for it: the mid-run peak.

Filing for Love followed a gentler version of the same curve. It opened at 4.4%, crossed 9% by its sixth episode, and closed at 9.7% nationwide with a peak of 10.8% — one of the few 2026 dramas to end its run above the 9% line rather than below it.

A Bona Fide Killer is tracing something similar in real time. It peaked at 10.2% in mid-August, sat around 9% for several weeks, then dropped to 8.6% on September 5. Its finale airs September 11 and 12 — after this piece was written.

A cable drama outrated some of the terrestrial hits

Twenty years ago, a cable channel beating a terrestrial network's ratings would have been close to unthinkable — Nielsen only began separately tracking cable viewership nationwide in 2013, well after terrestrial measurement started in 2006.

Reborn Rookie, JTBC's workplace revenge comedy, opened at a modest 3.7% and finished at 13.6%, a jump reporters at the time called one of the steepest single-season climbs on record. That finale beat MBC's Judge Returns and matched Perfect Crown — from a channel that spent most of the 2010s never touching double digits.

My Royal Nemesis, SBS's fantasy about a Joseon-era villainess whose soul transmigrates into a modern actress, shows terrestrial television is still competitive when a premise catches on: it finished at 11.8% after a slower build through May and June.

The list is still moving

Two of the nine dramas on this list have not finished airing as of this writing. Love on the Menu is still climbing toward its own finale later in the year, and its current 16.6% peak could still be broken by its own later episodes. A Bona Fide Killer's final two episodes will decide whether it closes as a ninth confirmed member of the list or fades the way Phantom Lawyer did.

Do Netflix hits ever show up in these numbers?

Only when a drama airs on a Korean channel first and streams later, which is how most Korean dramas still work. A handful of 2026's biggest international titles, including Teach You a Lesson, were Netflix-exclusive from day one and will never appear in a Nielsen Korea nationwide ranking, no matter how many countries they chart in.

Frequently asked

What counts as a good drama rating in Korea?

Korean networks treat anything above 13% nationwide as a genuine event; only three of 2026's nine 9%-plus dramas reached that level.

Why doesn't Teach You a Lesson have a Nielsen rating?

It was a Netflix-exclusive release that never aired on a Korean broadcast or cable channel, so Nielsen's TV panel never measured it.

What's the difference between the nationwide and Seoul ratings for a K-drama?

The nationwide figure covers all of Korea while the Seoul metropolitan figure covers only the capital region, and finale coverage often quotes whichever number is higher.
